As Celine Dion prepares for her highly anticipated Paris residency this September, many fans are searching for answers about the rare condition that nearly ended her career: stiff-person syndrome.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurological disorder that affects roughly one in a million people. It is an autoimmune condition that disrupts how the brain and spinal cord control muscle movement, causing progressive stiffness and painful spasms. The disorder most often develops in middle-aged adults and can worsen over time without proper treatment.

Dion first revealed her diagnosis publicly in December 2022, explaining that the condition had been affecting "every aspect" of her daily life, including her ability to walk and to sing. She later shared that symptoms had actually been building for 17 years before doctors identified the cause.

There is currently no cure for SPS, but treatment can help manage symptoms. Dion's own recovery has included immunotherapy, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and a demanding fitness regimen of Pilates and ballet to rebuild strength for the stage.

Through the uncertainty, Dion has repeatedly credited faith and the prayers of her fans as sources of strength. "I've felt your prayers and support, your kindness and love," she said earlier this year while announcing her return to performing.

Her comeback, a five-week Paris residency beginning September 12, will be her first extended run of shows since the diagnosis forced her off the road. For fans searching to understand the disease behind her journey, her story has become one of the most visible examples of living - and still performing - with a rare illness most people had never heard of before her.
