Sandra Bullock is speaking publicly for the first time about the death of her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, and the private grief she carried while caring for him through a three-year battle with ALS.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the 62-year-old actress said Randall, a photographer she began dating in 2015, asked her to keep his diagnosis private. "He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to," Bullock said. Randall died on August 5, 2023, at age 57.
Bullock described the toll of mourning someone who was still alive. "I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed," she said. "My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don't think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you're just on this treadmill."
She said her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person who knew about Randall's illness for much of that time, and that honoring his wish for privacy left her deeply isolated even as she raised her two children through the same season.
Grief carried in silence is a weight many families quietly know - and Scripture speaks directly into that kind of sorrow: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). Bullock's willingness to finally share her story may offer that same nearness to others walking through hidden loss of their own.
Randall's family previously said he "chose early to keep his journey with ALS private," and thanked the caregivers who supported him through his final years.
