Perez Hilton may be allowed to reunite with his three children, but the celebrity blogger reportedly won't be seeing them alone anytime soon.
A Miami judge has granted the 48-year-old supervised visitation with his children-Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8-while Hilton's mother, Teresita Lavandeira, has temporary custody amid her son's ongoing hospitalization.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Hilton's visits must be supervised by either a therapist or a family member agreed upon by the parties. Reports also indicate Hilton must receive psychiatric clearance before visitation can begin.
The arrangement represents the latest dramatic development for the longtime celebrity blogger following the frightening August 4 incident that resulted in his hospitalization.
Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., was hospitalized after authorities responded to his Miami home during a disturbing livestream in which he appeared to harm himself. Police records cited by PEOPLE said emergency responders treated him for lacerations and an overdose before he was taken to the hospital.
His sister, Barbara Lavandeira, reportedly discovered her brother injured and immediately focused on getting Hilton's three children away from the scene.
In the days that followed, the family moved quickly to establish a temporary arrangement for the children.
On August 18, a judge granted Hilton's mother temporary custody, giving her authority to handle the children's day-to-day care, including matters involving their schooling and healthcare. Hilton remains their legal parent and reportedly agreed to the temporary arrangement.
Now comes the sensitive question of when-and under what circumstances-father and children can be together again.
The court's answer appears to be: yes, but with safeguards.
Hilton's supervised-visitation arrangement will reportedly remain in effect until the court orders otherwise or a new agreement is reached.
The custody developments come as Hilton continues receiving medical and psychiatric treatment. His family said earlier this week that his health remains their priority and has largely kept details about his recovery private.
For someone who built a career by turning celebrity drama into public entertainment, Hilton is suddenly experiencing an intensely personal family crisis under the same media microscope he once trained on Hollywood's biggest stars.
But behind the sensational headlines are three young children and a family attempting to navigate an extremely serious situation.
For now, Grandma is taking charge, Perez is focusing on recovery, and any reunion with his children will happen under supervision.
