Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has officially become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in box office history, Universal Pictures confirmed Thursday, surpassing the $1.338 billion global total set by Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024.

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has outgrossed Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool & Wolverine to become the biggest R-rated movie at the global box office, with the film's worldwide haul now standing at $1.352 billion. Its domestic total has reached $516.3 million, while strong international numbers - including a recent surge past 6 million admissions in South Korea - have carried the rest of the total.

Ryan Reynolds, star of the "Deadpool" franchise, took to social media to congratulate "The Odyssey" and pass the torch, referencing the Honda Odyssey minivan featured in his own film's climactic battle scene. "Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time," Reynolds wrote. "That is one helluva car."

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Robert Pattinson, the film has drawn audiences into a demanding, faith-tinged retelling of Homer's ancient epic - a journey home marked by suffering, endurance, and redemption, themes JubileeCast explored earlier this month when it broke down the film's surprising biblical parallels. "The Odyssey" also ranks as Nolan's biggest movie of all time, surpassing 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises."

The film now stands at $1.35 billion worldwide and is on track to gross more than $1.6 billion as it continues its run, with releases still ahead in Japan this September. Only three R-rated films - "The Odyssey," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and "Joker" - have ever crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
