Director Jon Turteltaub confirmed Friday night that "National Treasure 3" is officially moving forward, with Nicolas Cage returning as Benjamin Franklin Gates nearly two decades after "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." Turteltaub made the announcement during a live taping of the National Treasure Hunt podcast in Philadelphia, telling the audience, "I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop. It's finally real."
According to Turteltaub, Disney and the creative team have agreed on a script, and "to whatever extent we can, everyone's back" among the original cast. The update follows years of conflicting signals about the sequel's future - producer Jerry Bruckheimer had offered cautious optimism since 2020, while Cage himself told ScreenRant in March 2024 that "there is no National Treasure 3."
The original 2004 film, much of it shot on location in Philadelphia, and its 2007 sequel together grossed more than $800 million worldwide. No release date or production schedule has been announced.
