Olivia Rodrigo has released a new song, "Serena Joy," now available on streaming platforms after a limited-edition CD debut sold out in hours.
The track first appeared Aug. 21 as a 500-copy CD single, sold exclusively at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California. All copies sold out the same day, and the song went to digital streaming Aug. 24, days ahead of schedule.
"Serena Joy" was originally recorded during sessions for Rodrigo's third album, "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in June. Rodrigo told Etalk in July that the song didn't fit the album's storyline but that she hoped it would find a home "down the line."
The title references a character from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel "The Handmaid's Tale." Rodrigo has not commented publicly on the song's meaning.
The release comes just ahead of Rodrigo's inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival, an all-women lineup set for Aug. 29 in Irvine, California, featuring Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, and others. A portion of the song's proceeds will go toward the festival's charitable fund.
