Simon Cowell's seat at the "America's Got Talent" judges' table has a familiar face filling it while he recovers from back surgery - Kenan Thompson.

The show announced Friday, August 28, via Instagram that the "Saturday Night Live" star will join Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara, and Mel B for the Quarterfinals 3 episode airing Tuesday, September 1. "A comedy legend is taking over the Judges' table!" the post read.

It's a full-circle moment for Thompson, who previously filled Cowell's seat in 2020 after the mogul's serious electric bike accident required spinal fusion surgery involving a metal rod and screws. Kelly Clarkson also stepped in briefly that season.

This time, Cowell's absence stems from what his representative called a "routine" procedure tied to that same back injury. "Obviously medical matters are private, but it's routine and he will be back in a few weeks," his rep told Entertainment Weekly. AGT host Terry Crews echoed the sentiment on-air, telling viewers, "It's not an emergency, but it can't be put off... we're sending you our very best wishes for a speedy recovery."

As a guest judge, Thompson is expected to have use of the Golden Buzzer, which could send one of the night's competing acts straight to the finale.

Season 21's live rounds have already carried a strong thread of faith this year, with contestants crediting their journeys to prayer and perseverance - a spirit fans are extending to Cowell himself as he steps away to heal.

The two-part AGT finale airs September 22 and 23.
