Ariana Grande has finally explained why she appeared to be limping onstage-and the answer sounds far more painful than fans initially realized.
The 33-year-old pop superstar revealed that she suffered a "deep cut" on her foot shortly before the final two performances of her Eternal Sunshine Tour at London's O2 Arena. The injury left Grande bandaged and struggling to place her full weight on the affected foot, forcing her to make a noticeable last-minute change to her meticulously choreographed show.
Her towering signature heels were out. "Cozy footwear" was in.
Grande addressed the situation after concerned fans circulated footage in which she appeared to limp while performing "Supernatural." Although some viewers feared that she had suffered a sprain or muscular injury, the singer clarified that the problem was a cut and assured ticketholders that she had no intention of canceling either concert.
"Please do not fret," Grande told her self-described "petals," promising that it was still "on with the show."
The singer even joked that she would simply be "a few inches shorter than usual" without her famous heels. She subsequently returned to the stage in comfortable boots and was filmed dancing through "Yes, And?" despite the bandaging beneath her footwear.
Grande has not publicly explained exactly how the cut occurred. However, she said she was already "on the mend" and hoped fans would understand if she appeared to have difficulty placing weight on her foot.
The injury adds an unexpectedly dramatic twist to what was already destined to be an emotional conclusion. Grande's September 1 concert at the O2 closes a tour comprising more than 30 North American performances and a 10-show London residency. London carries particular significance for the singer because she lived there while filming the two Wicked movies.
More importantly, the final performance marks Grande's last scheduled concert before she takes a much-publicized step away from the spotlight.
Her representative previously confirmed that Grande would retreat from public-facing appearances after the tour, following months of intense online commentary about her health and physical appearance. The singer has withdrawn from the planned West End revival of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George as part of that decision.
Grande has insisted that the break was planned and was neither impulsive nor simply a reaction to recent criticism. During an emotional concert speech, she described the tour as healing and transformative but said boundaries and rest had become necessary following several relentlessly busy years.
That period included filming both Wicked installments, shooting the forthcoming comedy Focker-in-Law, promoting her acting work, releasing new music and undertaking an extensive arena tour. A representative said Grande wanted to complete the tour "healthily and happily" before beginning her break.
The injury will not entirely remove Grande from public view. She is expected to appear alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro in Focker-in-Law, scheduled for release on November 25. However, her team has made it clear that she will significantly reduce public appearances while prioritizing her well-being.
For now, Grande appears determined to end this chapter on her own terms. A painful cut may have taken away the heels, but it was not enough to take Ariana Grande off the stage.
