Universal Pictures has cast Tre Hale, best known for Netflix's crime drama Nemesis and Apple TV+'s Platonic, as Suge Knight in Snoop, the studio's upcoming biopic of Snoop Dogg. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the casting this week, and it's the latest piece in a rapidly filling call sheet.
Knight co-founded Death Row Records, the label that launched Snoop, Dr. Dre, and Tupac Shakur into the mainstream in the early 1990s. He's joined on the cast list by Jonathan Daviss (Outer Banks) as Snoop, Myles Bullock as Dr. Dre, Camron Jones as Tupac Shakur, Algee Smith as Warren G, and Lauren London as Snoop's mother, Beverly Tate.
Craig Brewer, known for Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, is directing from a script by Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole. Production begins in Los Angeles this month, with a theatrical release set for August 6, 2027 - the first film under Death Row Pictures' new deal with NBCUniversal.
Beyond the Death Row years, Snoop's story includes a chapter many Christian audiences already know well: his 2018 gospel double album Bible of Love, where he spoke openly about returning to his Christian faith after years of searching. Whether that part of his journey makes it to screen remains unconfirmed, but for fans hoping this "definitive" biopic tells the whole story, it's a piece worth watching for.
