The famous voice behind Wheel of Fortune has suddenly been silenced-and the mystery surrounding his suspension is raising even more questions.
Jim Thornton, who has introduced contestants and prizes on the beloved game show since 2011, has been suspended while Sony Pictures Television investigates undisclosed allegations reportedly stemming from an incident aboard an American Airlines flight in May.
"We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton," Sony said in a statement. "He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation."
According to TMZ, another passenger complained about Thornton to a flight attendant during the journey to Los Angeles. The pilot reportedly contacted authorities ahead of the plane's arrival, and law-enforcement officers met Thornton at the gate.
However, Thornton's attorney is pushing back strongly against any suggestion of criminal wrongdoing. The lawyer told TMZ that Thornton "did not engage in any illegal conduct," was not arrested and has not been charged with a crime. According to the attorney, officers spoke with the announcer for five minutes or less, determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and allowed him to leave.
The precise nature of the passenger's complaint has not been publicly disclosed, making Sony's decision to suspend Thornton and begin recasting his position all the more intriguing. American Airlines reportedly confirmed that an incident occurred and said it was cooperating with the investigation, but the carrier did not identify Thornton or provide additional details.
Adding another bizarre twist, Thornton's unmistakable voice was still heard on a prerecorded episode of Wheel of Fortune broadcast after news of his suspension broke. His appearance did not mean he had already returned to work-the episode had been taped before Sony removed him from his duties-but the timing created an awkward contrast between what viewers were hearing and what was unfolding behind the scenes.
Thornton has been part of the Wheel of Fortune family for approximately 15 years, succeeding legendary announcer Charlie O'Donnell after his death in 2010. He has worked alongside longtime host Pat Sajak, Vanna White and current host Ryan Seacrest, while also serving as announcer on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.
His familiar voice has become woven into the identity of one of television's most enduring game shows. Now, however, Sony is searching for a replacement while attempting to determine what actually happened aboard that flight.
For the moment, Thornton remains suspended-but not arrested or charged-and Sony has not publicly revealed the allegations it is investigating. Until more details emerge, the biggest unanswered puzzle on Wheel of Fortune has nothing to do with the letter board.
