Hayden Panettiere's mother has revealed the heartbreaking family rift that separated them during the final year of the actress' life-and says she never imagined their time apart would become permanent.
In her first interview since Panettiere's sudden death at 36, Lesley Vogel said her daughter's troubled relationship with on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson ultimately drove a wedge between them. Vogel had reportedly stayed with the Nashville and Heroes star about a year earlier as she attempted to help her through another difficult period.
"She knew that Brian was toxic. She knew she had to get him out of her life," Vogel alleged during an appearance on Good Morning America. But according to the grieving mother, everything changed when Panettiere called to say she was returning to Hickerson.
"When I got the phone call from her saying, 'I'm going to be with the person I love,' I just lost it," Vogel recalled. "I could not believe that she had gone that far back."
The painful decision left mother and daughter estranged. Vogel said she needed some distance, believing the separation would merely be a temporary "pocket of time" before they eventually reconciled. Tragically, that opportunity never came.
"I did not by any stretch of the imagination think that this was gonna happen to Hayden," she said. "I don't know why. I just didn't."
Hickerson's volatile history with Panettiere had long attracted troubling headlines. He was arrested multiple times during their relationship, including on domestic violence charges in 2019 and 2020. Panettiere later described that chapter as "very dark and complicated," revealing that she had also been privately battling alcohol and opioid addiction.
Panettiere was found unresponsive inside an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were reportedly at the apartment and called 911. The actress was later pronounced dead following an apparent cardiac arrest.
Vogel's emotional account adds another devastating layer to Panettiere's final chapter: a mother who stepped away hoping it might force a change, a daughter who returned to a controversial relationship and a reconciliation that never had the chance to happen.
