“God Showed Up!” Tyler Perry Pays Elderly Widow’s $18,000 Home Lien And Gives Her Another $25,000

Tyler Perry has once again opened his heart-and his wallet-after an 81-year-old widow's devastating insurance battle threatened the home she had spent decades building.

Brenda Daurham, a retired hairstylist from Markham, Illinois, had been displaced for more than six months after a pipe beneath her kitchen sink burst on Valentine's Day. Water spread through portions of the home where she had lived for more than 30 years, leaving behind extensive damage.

Daurham believed she would be protected because she had reportedly paid for Allstate homeowners' insurance for decades. She recalled initially being told that everything would be covered and that she did not need to worry. However, Allstate later denied the claim, citing exclusions involving wear and tear, deterioration and seepage.

The restoration company responsible for the cleanup disputed that finding, arguing that the damage resulted from a "sudden and accidental plumbing failure." When the company was not paid, it filed a mechanic's lien against Daurham's property for precisely $17,827.96-plus possible interest, legal fees and additional costs.

Suddenly, the elderly widow who believed she had done everything correctly was displaced, overwhelmed and facing an enormous debt attached to her home.

"I have nothing, nothing at all, so I just want somebody to help me," a tearful Daurham told FOX 32 Chicago. The pressure reportedly became so unbearable that she went to the emergency room after feeling as though she was having a breakdown.

Then God showed up through some unexpected people.

FOX 32 investigative reporter Tia Ewing brought Daurham's heartbreaking ordeal before the public. The report spread across social media and eventually reached Tyler Perry, who was apparently not about to sit quietly while the elderly homeowner fought the insurance giant alone.

"Hey Allstate, step to the front real quick," Perry declared in a blistering Instagram post. "This woman is 81 years old. You call this being in good hands?"

The filmmaker then delivered the words Daurham had desperately needed to hear: "Don't worry Ms. Daurham, help is on the way."

And Perry did far more than make a social-media promise. FOX 32 has now confirmed that he paid the nearly $18,000 lien in full, removing one of the largest threats hanging over Daurham's property. A source also told People that Perry is giving her an additional $25,000 to help her rebuild her life and return home. 

Daurham has not yet spoken personally with Perry, but she confirmed that the lien has been cleared. As a longtime fan who remembers following him since his early appearances at Chicago's Regal Theater, she said she was not surprised by his compassion because he has helped so many people-including struggling older entertainers-over the years.

Perry's generosity also inspired a wave of local support. Suheir Barakat, owner of S2 Grill, has offered to provide Daurham with furniture and lighting. Black Men United has pledged kitchen supplies, flooring, roofing materials or anything else necessary to help the widow reclaim her home.

"That should tell her that God is here," Barakat said of the growing community response.

FOX 32 reporter Tia Ewing also became emotional while discussing the dramatic turnaround, remarking that positive stories can change lives and that, in Daurham's case, "God showed up."

However, the battle may not be completely over. Daurham said that although she appreciates Perry paying the lien, she does not believe Allstate should be allowed to "get away free." Her family says the insurance company contacted them twice following the television coverage, and they are continuing to seek answers over the denied claim.

Allstate told FOX 32 that it supports customers by carefully evaluating losses and applying coverage fairly, but said it could not disclose details about Daurham's individual claim because of customer privacy. 

What began as an insurance nightmare has now become an extraordinary story of faith, generosity and community. Tyler Perry eliminated the debt, strangers began furnishing the home, local volunteers offered to complete repairs, and one frightened widow finally found a reason to laugh again.

When asked what Perry's famously fearless character Madea might do about the situation, Daurham delivered the perfect response: "Call the po-po!"
