Jim Thornton’s “Panic” Google Search Revealed After Wheel Of Fortune Chatroom Scandal

The scandal surrounding former Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has taken another startling turn after photographs reportedly revealed the anxious Google search he made moments after a fellow airline passenger raised concerns about what was visible on his laptop.

Thornton was allegedly photographed visiting and interacting with a website described as offering mental-health support to people experiencing pedophilic thoughts during a May 14 American Airlines flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles. After the concerned passenger alerted a flight attendant, Thornton was instructed to close his computer.

But apparently, that was not the end of the uncomfortable midair drama.

According to TMZ, Thornton then appeared to search Google on his phone for information about whether someone could connect him personally to a particular online chatroom. Although parts of the screen were reportedly obscured and difficult to read, the AI-generated response allegedly included the words "Why You ... to Panic."

The passenger who took the photographs claimed Thornton appeared "nervous" following the flight attendant's intervention. American Airlines confirmed that law-enforcement officers met the flight at Los Angeles International Airport after another customer reported concerns about activity onboard.

Thornton was questioned but not arrested or charged with a crime. His attorney, Allison Hart, insists that he accidentally visited lifeline.chat while attempting to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline website and its online support service.

Hart said Thornton did not initially understand the nature of the website, left after discovering its stated purpose and never returned. She also stressed that the site itself is not illegal and does not contain child sexual-abuse material. According to his lawyer, officers spoke with Thornton for fewer than five minutes, determined that no crime had occurred and allowed him to leave.

However, photographs later published by TMZ reportedly showed messages being entered into the chat bar while Thornton wore a Wheel of Fortune jacket. Additional images allegedly showed those messages appearing under the username "NicholasB77." Thornton's lawyer has continued to deny wrongdoing and maintains that he has never viewed, downloaded or consumed child sexual-abuse material.

The legal distinction did not save his television career.

Sony Pictures Television Studios initially suspended Thornton after learning of the allegations. On September 4, the company announced that his employment had been terminated "effective immediately" following what it described as a thorough investigation.

Thornton had served as the iconic game show's announcer since 2011. Now producers are reportedly facing the enormous task of editing him out of episodes prepared for the new season, which is scheduled to premiere September 14. That could mean replacing recorded announcements and removing appearances that had already been filmed.

For viewers accustomed to hearing Thornton's voice introduce the show's hosts and contestants, his abrupt disappearance will be difficult to miss. Yet the most damaging detail may be that mysterious Google search: while it does not prove illegal activity, its apparent reference to "panic" has intensified questions about what Thornton believed had just been witnessed.

His attorney says it was an innocent online mistake. Sony's decision suggests the controversy had already become too serious for one of television's most carefully protected brands. Either way, the voice of Wheel of Fortune has been silenced-and the scandal is still spinning.
