Steven Curtis Chapman Releases 9/11 Tribute Song He Wrote 24 Years Ago But Never Recorded

Steven Curtis Chapman has released "Remember the Day," a new tribute song written to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks - one he actually wrote back in 2002 but had never recorded until now.

In a Facebook post announcing the release, Chapman explained that he wrote the song while traveling from Nashville to New York City to perform at a night of remembrance at Madison Square Garden on the first anniversary of 9/11. He recalled watching fighter jets fly over Washington, D.C., with his wife Mary Beth and daughter Shaoey on the day of the attacks in 2001, memories he said came flooding back on that drive into the city a year later.

Chapman said he wrote "Remember the Day" to help process the nation's shared grief and to honor those who lost their lives, while also celebrating "the courage, sacrifice, and compassion" that carried the country through the tragedy. He held onto the song for over two decades before deciding this year's 25th anniversary was the right moment to finally record it.

The singer tied the song's message directly to Scripture in his announcement, pointing to Romans 12:21 - "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" - as the verse that's stayed true for him since that first anniversary performance and still holds today.
