Barbra Streisand’s Alleged $3 Million Dolly Parton Donation Exposed As An Internet Hoax

It sounded like the perfect Hollywood tribute: Barbra Streisand quietly donating a staggering $3 million to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library following the country legend's death. Unfortunately, the heartwarming story appears to have been invented.

The claim spread rapidly across Instagram, Facebook and Threads, with emotional posts declaring that Streisand had stepped forward to "keep Dolly's dream alive." Some versions even mentioned a touching personal note supposedly accompanying the donation-but none offered a statement from Streisand, her representatives or the Dollywood Foundation.

Now Streisand's longtime representative has firmly denied the story. After journalist Roger Friedman contacted the singer's camp directly, her representative gave an unambiguous response: "Not true." 

That means there is currently no credible evidence that Streisand donated $3 million to the literacy program. There is also no official confirmation of the alleged accompanying note that has been moving fans to tears online.

The false report may have seemed believable because Streisand has an extensive record of philanthropy and reportedly admired Dolly. It also emerged as fans searched for ways to preserve the singer's charitable legacy following her death. However, admiration between two entertainment icons does not transform a viral social-media post into fact.

Dolly founded the Imagination Library in 1995 in honor of her father, who could not read or write. What began as a local Tennessee initiative eventually became an international literacy program, distributing more than 300 million books to children. Dolly's family reportedly asked mourners to support the organization in lieu of sending flowers, helping generate renewed attention-and perhaps providing fertile ground for fabricated celebrity-donation stories.

The good news is that the Imagination Library remains active and continues sending free, age-appropriate books to participating children from birth until age five. It is supported through the Dollywood Foundation, government partnerships, local organizations and individual donors. Some regional programs are still seeking additional financial support, but there is no evidence that Streisand was recruited to rescue the entire organization.

It was a beautiful story while people believed it: one legendary singer reaching across musical boundaries to protect another legend's most treasured mission. The truth, however, is considerably less glamorous. Barbra Streisand did not make the reported $3 million donation-and social media apparently wrote the sentimental celebrity ending that fans desperately wanted to read.
