Country singer Gabby Mooney, the sister of Dan + Shay's Shay Mooney, is opening up about a 2023 medical emergency she says brought her face-to-face with death - and with Jesus.
Mooney, 37, shared her story on Hulu and Disney+'s IMPACT x Nightline, in the episode "Back From The Dead." She told correspondent Ashan Singh that the ordeal began with a pounding headache during a drive home to Arkansas. She pushed through, hoping rest would help.
It didn't. Hours after arriving home, her mother woke her in the night, alarmed by how sick she looked. Mooney soon began having seizures. With tornado weather grounding regular ambulances, her parents arranged a private ambulance and met the crew partway, at a local Baptist church, to speed her to the ER.
At the hospital, as doctors attempted to intubate her, Mooney says her vital signs stopped. "I died," she recalled.
It's in that moment Mooney says she encountered something she still describes vividly: a sense of Jesus' hand reaching for hers as her spirit rose, and an unmistakable impression - not yet.
Doctors later discovered a large cyst on her brain along with hydrocephalus, a dangerous buildup of fluid, and Mooney underwent emergency brain surgery. She's since dealt with facial paralysis from the ordeal but says her faith carried her through recovery - and now shapes the music she's releasing.
Her story lands as a reminder, for many viewers, that testimonies of faith can surface in the most unexpected corners of the entertainment world.
