Darlene Zschech Turns 61 As Worship Pioneer Celebrates A Bold New Chapter

One of the defining voices of modern worship is celebrating another year of life-and her former Hillsong family has not forgotten the woman who helped take its music around the world.

Darlene Zschech turns 61 on September 8, 2026. Marking the occasion, the Hillsong Wonders Instagram account shared a collection of photographs and wrote: "A happy and blessed birthday @darlenezschech!!! We love you."

The affectionate message quickly drew hundreds of likes, including one from Grammy-winning gospel artist Israel Houghton. For longtime Hillsong followers, however, the post carried far more emotional weight than an ordinary celebrity birthday greeting.

Zschech served as Hillsong Church's worship pastor from 1996 until 2007 and helped develop the musical identity that transformed a Sydney congregation into a global worship powerhouse. She led and produced numerous Hillsong recordings, mentored a generation of worship leaders and introduced songs that traveled far beyond Australia.

Her defining composition, "Shout to the Lord," was first recorded on Hillsong's 1994 album People Just Like Us. Zschech has recalled being so nervous when presenting the song to then-worship pastor Geoff Bullock that she asked him to turn away while she sang it.

That vulnerable private performance became one of the most recognizable songs in contemporary church history. "Shout to the Lord" has appeared on hundreds of recordings, been translated into numerous languages and been performed everywhere from neighborhood churches to the Vatican and the White House.

Zschech also wrote or co-wrote worship favorites including "Worthy Is the Lamb," "At the Cross," "The Potter's Hand," "I Will Run to You," "All Things Are Possible" and "My Hope." Her voice became inseparable from landmark Hillsong recordings including God Is in the House, All Things Are Possible, Blessed and Hope.

But Zschech is not spending her 61st birthday simply looking backward.

Just weeks before the celebration, she appeared on Cheryl Nembhard's On the Path for a special conversation about the evolution of worship, Christian celebrity culture and her newest creative venture, House of Worship. The interview premiered on August 22.

During the conversation, Zschech discussed why different cultural expressions belong in worship and how praise sustained her through seasons of pain, loss and uncertainty. She also reflected on the responsibility of established leaders to mentor younger voices rather than cling to their own platforms.

Her current definition of worship is broader than music or performance. It is, she emphasized, a surrendered life-an especially meaningful conviction from someone whose ministry has included international success, church controversy and a highly public battle with breast cancer.

Zschech now serves as an executive producer of House of Worship alongside Michael W. Smith. Released in select theaters on August 23 and digitally on September 1, the film unites 25 prominent Christian artists to reimagine songs that shaped modern worship.

The lineup includes CeCe Winans, Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, Israel Houghton, Matt Redman, Naomi Raine, Charity Gayle, Hillary Scott, Brian and Jenn Johnson, Pat Barrett and Chris Brown of Elevation Worship. The featured songs include "Open the Eyes of My Heart," "The Heart of Worship," "Here I Am to Worship," "How Great Is Our God," "Agnus Dei" and, fittingly, "Shout to the Lord."

Rather than merely appearing in the film, Zschech helped shape its vision: bringing together the original voices behind beloved worship anthems and the younger artists carrying those songs into a new generation. A companion 13-track album was also recorded in the round at World Wide Stages in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

The project places Zschech exactly where she appears most comfortable at this stage of life-honoring the past without living inside it.

After leaving Hillsong's staff, Zschech and her husband, Mark, became senior pastors of Hope Unlimited Church in New South Wales. She has continued recording, preaching, writing and supporting humanitarian work while embracing her roles as a mother and grandmother.

Her 2024 album Testament marked the 30th anniversary of "Shout to the Lord" with reimagined legacy songs and new material. A subsequent version of her signature anthem featuring CeCe Winans brought together two of Christian music's most celebrated female voices.

At 61, Zschech is no longer merely the woman who led worship on some of Hillsong's biggest albums. She is a pastor, survivor, mentor, filmmaker and living link between the worship explosion of the 1990s and today's multicultural global Church.
