Michael W. Smith Revives His 9/11 Anthem Inspired By A Conversation With President George W. Bush

Nearly 25 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks shook America, Michael W. Smith is returning to one of the most personal-and patriotic-songs of his career.

The Christian music legend has released a newly reimagined recording of "There She Stands," the emotional anthem he first recorded in the aftermath of 9/11. But the song's origin includes a fascinating presidential connection: Smith says it was inspired, in part, by a conversation with then-President George W. Bush.

"'There She Stands' is a song I originally recorded about 24 years ago in the aftermath of 9/11," Smith explained while announcing the release. "It was inspired in part by a conversation I had with President George W. Bush during that time."

Smith described the song as an intensely personal response to America's grief, resilience and determination to remain united after unimaginable loss. Rather than leaving the anthem preserved as a musical time capsule from 2002, he has now returned to it with the weight of another quarter-century behind him.

Written by Smith and Wes King, "There She Stands" originally appeared on Smith's 2002 album Worship Again. The project went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album, while the song became one of Smith's most recognizable patriotic recordings.

Its presidential connection did not end with the original conversation. Smith performed "There She Stands" at the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, placing the Christian artist before a massive national audience as Bush campaigned for a second term. Smith has maintained friendships with both George W. Bush and his late father, President George H. W. Bush. He later performed his beloved song "Friends" at the elder Bush's state funeral in 2018.

The new rendition, billed as "There She Stands (Remembered & Reimagined)," arrives through Rocketown Records and The Fuel Music. Its release is especially timely as the United States approaches the 25th anniversary of 9/11-a milestone certain to reopen memories of where people were when the planes struck and how dramatically the world changed afterward.

Smith's decision to revive the song also lands at a moment when American unity often feels more fragile than it did in the immediate aftermath of the attacks. That makes the message about resilience and hope sound less like a nostalgic look backward and more like a plea for the present.

"I hope these new recordings move you the way this song has moved me over the years," Smith told listeners.

More than two decades later, Smith is revisiting a song born from national tragedy, presidential conversation and personal faith. The arrangement may have been reimagined, but its central image remains untouched: an American flag still standing after everything intended to bring it down.
