Perez Hilton's recovery has taken a difficult new turn: after weeks spent treating broken bones, serious wounds and significant blood loss, the celebrity blogger is now expected to enter a specialist facility for intensive mental health treatment.
Hilton's brother-in-law, Tom, said the 48-year-old was lucid but had only recently finished receiving treatment for the physical injuries sustained during his August 4 crisis. Those injuries reportedly included wounds from self-harm and broken bones caused by falls. Hilton also continued to experience complications connected to the severe sepsis he survived earlier this year.
"He's going to be going into a facility that is going to focus on his mental recovery," Tom revealed, cautioning fans not to expect Hilton to reappear publicly within days. Relatives have reportedly avoided questioning him extensively about the incident because they fear that revisiting it too soon could trigger further anxiety.
But Hilton's treatment is not the family's only challenge. His mother, Teresita Lavandeira, has been given temporary custody of his three children-Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8. She will oversee their schooling, medical care and daily needs while Hilton continues his recovery.
Hilton may visit the children only under supervision and after receiving psychiatric clearance. The supervisor must be either a mental health professional or a relative approved by both Hilton and his mother. Significantly, Hilton consented to the temporary custody arrangement, suggesting that the family is united in placing the children's welfare first.
The children, along with Hilton's sister and niece, had reportedly been inside his Miami home shortly before the disturbing livestream began. They left after Hilton's sister discovered that he was experiencing a severe mental health crisis. His family has since asked photographers and members of the public to stay away from the property so the children can recover privately.
The immediate danger may have passed, but Hilton now faces two enormous challenges: undergoing intensive psychiatric treatment and rebuilding a safe relationship with his children. No timetable has been announced for his discharge, return to work or restoration of unsupervised custody.
