Is Jimmy Kimmel Being Pushed Out? ABC Fires Back at Explosive Claim His Show Will End in 2027

Is Jimmy Kimmel about to become late-night television's next major casualty-or is someone trying to write his television obituary prematurely?

Page Six has reported that Jimmy Kimmel Live! is expected to end in May 2027 after 24 years on ABC. Citing unnamed insiders, the outlet claimed Kimmel's current contract will not be extended and that the forthcoming season will be his last. One source reportedly delivered the supposed verdict bluntly: "His contract is not getting extended." 

But ABC quickly poured cold water all over that bombshell. A representative for ABC Entertainment called the story "inaccurate" and "purely speculative," meaning no official decision to end the show has been announced. 

That carefully worded denial, however, may not completely silence the speculation. ABC said the report is inaccurate, but it did not announce a new contract extending Kimmel beyond May 2027. The host signed only a one-year extension in December 2025, keeping him behind the desk through the end of the next television season. 

Kimmel has also repeatedly flirted with the possibility of walking away. In June 2026, he acknowledged that negotiations for another contract had not begun and spoke candidly about wanting greater freedom in his personal life. His wife and executive producer, Molly McNearney, has similarly discussed the possibility that the show could eventually end.

The alleged cancellation would arrive during a brutal period for traditional late-night television. Networks are struggling with shrinking audiences, declining advertising income, rising production expenses, and viewers increasingly consuming monologues as short online clips rather than watching entire episodes. Stephen Colbert's departure from CBS has already intensified questions about whether expensive nightly talk shows still make financial sense.

Sources speaking to Page Six claimed that Kimmel's political commentary is not the reason his program may be approaching its conclusion. Instead, the reported decision was attributed to restructuring and cost-cutting inside Disney, ABC's parent company. Nevertheless, it would be almost impossible to separate Kimmel's future from the political storm that has surrounded him.

ABC temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2025 following backlash over remarks connected to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The decision sparked a fierce debate about political pressure, corporate power, and freedom of speech. Kimmel returned to the air several days later, and ABC subsequently extended his contract through May 2027.

Kimmel has hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! since January 2003, making him one of the longest-serving hosts in American late-night history. The show has survived changing viewing habits, political controversies, network pressure, and Kimmel's repeated suggestions that he might finally be ready to leave.

For now, the curtain has not officially fallen. ABC insists the latest report is speculation, while Page Six's sources insist the end has already been decided. That leaves Kimmel in an unusually awkward position: guaranteed a desk until May 2027, but with a growing cloud hanging over what happens after his final contractual monologue.

Whether ABC cancels him, Kimmel retires voluntarily, or the two sides negotiate another surprise extension, one thing appears certain-the next season of Jimmy Kimmel Live! could become the most closely watched of his entire 24-year run.
