In 1986's The Transformers: The Movie, Optimus Prime is fatally wounded battling Megatron. As his life fades, a timer onscreen marks the exact moment: 26:08:26. Read as a date, that timestamp lines up with August 26 - the day Cullen passed away, forty years after he first gave the Autobot leader his voice.
Fans quickly connected the dots online, calling it a fitting final tribute from the character Cullen made iconic. In the scene, a dying Optimus tells his fellow Autobots, "Do not grieve. Soon I will be one with the Matrix" - words fans are now reading as strangely prophetic.
Cullen voiced Optimus Prime from the character's 1984 debut through 2023's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, alongside other beloved roles like Eeyore in The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. He often said the gravel-toned strength he gave Optimus was inspired by his older brother Larry, a decorated Marine veteran of Vietnam.
