Nearly eight months after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson-area home, investigators say they are looking into a possible new ransom note. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said Monday, Sept. 28, that its Guthrie task force was recently made aware of the note and is working to determine its credibility. The sheriff's office said it is also aware of social media comments about the note and is looking into them.
What is known so far
Details are extremely limited. Officials have not said where the note was found or who it was sent to. An FBI task force is also aware of it. It is the sheriff's department's first public update since Aug. 17, when human remains found in the desert outside Tucson were determined not to be connected to Guthrie.
Why investigators are cautious
This would not be the first note in the case. The FBI has said some notes were deemed extortion attempts without legitimacy, while other ransom demands may be legitimate and are still being investigated. Investigators have not said whether this new note is authentic.
Where the case stands
Guthrie, 84, is the mother of "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie. She was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home on Jan. 31 and reported missing the next day. No arrests have been made. Rewards totaling more than $1 million remain active.
