"Last Thing You Need" follows two on-and-off partners who can't stay away from each other, even though they know the relationship isn't good for either of them.
That push-and-pull is why the song fits Grand Theft Auto VI. Co-writer Blake Pendergrass said the emotional tone made it a natural match for the game's storyline, which follows a romance between lead characters Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.
Morgan Wallen released the song on September 17, 2026, as one of six advance singles from Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album. He wrote it with John Byron, Chase McGill, Blake Pendergrass, and Charlie Handsome, and Joey Moi shares production duties. Pendergrass said it was written earlier this year and wasn't a leftover from the I'm the Problem sessions. The team chose it for the game because they felt it suited the project best.
The sound leans away from traditional country. It's synth-backed and pop-infused, with a Miami-inspired feel. It lands closer to his earlier single "Been By Now," with a little more twang.
The song has also debuted on three U.K. charts, though it's one of his lowest-peaking hits on each of them.
The full 34-track soundtrack arrives November 19, the same day the game launches.
Wallen has released faith-themed music before. He chose Good Friday 2022 to release "Don't Think Jesus." Faith-minded fans and parents may want to preview the game and soundtrack content before deciding what fits their household.
