Eight people, including two young children, were killed in a mass shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, according to police. The suspected gunman also died, and officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Police were called to the 700 block of Perry Street on Erie's east side just before 5 p.m. Friday. Officers found two women dead outside the home, and more victims were found inside after police entered.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the victims included a 1-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, four women (one of them pregnant), and two young men. Police said the suspect was related to seven of the eight victims. The remaining victim was a family friend. Reports that mention "nine dead" count the suspect in that total. The coroner has ruled the eight deaths homicides, and the suspect's death a suicide.
Erie's mayor and police said the situation has been contained. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said his administration is offering full support to the city and that he and his wife are praying for the families and the Erie community.
For decades, Erie's faith community has gathered for "Take Back the Site" prayer vigils, led by area Catholic sisters, at places touched by violence. The vigils pray for victims and for those who cause harm. Many residents are expected to turn to prayer in the days ahead.
