The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will enter Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 13, for surgery to remove a lung nodule.

The pope is scheduled to be admitted "late in the morning" on Tuesday, according to the Holy See Press Office. His hospital stay after the surgery is expected to last about one week. He held his scheduled audiences Monday morning. The Vatican has not said exactly when the operation will take place.

The hospitalization means several public appearances and meetings are canceled for the coming week. One affected event is a Vatican meeting on Amoris Laetitia. The pope had planned to hear its conclusions, and after leaving the hospital he intends to return to the document and offer his reflections.

The surgery comes about four weeks before the pope's longest international trip, with stops in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The Vatican has not announced changes to that trip.

The pope has received messages of support from Churches and political leaders across five continents. Philippine bishops are urging Masses for the pope, and Christian and Jewish leaders have joined in prayer.
