Prince Harry says he wants peace with his family. In a GQ interview published Oct. 20, the Duke of Sussex said of his rift with King Charles III and Prince William, "I want it to work out." He called reconciliation "the most important thing."

Harry said there is already enough drama in the world and in people's lives to keep carrying family issues, and that scars last but he wants to encourage everyone to let go of the past. He also spoke about losing his mother, Princess Diana, when he was 12, and about his mental health struggles. He said his children are enjoying their school in the UK. The 42-year-old is promoting a MasterClass focused on dealing with grief, and he moved back to London in August. He said he grieves where the relationships with his father and brother now stand.

Reports of the interview don't show Harry speaking in religious terms, but his words echo themes Christians know well:

  • Pursue peace. Romans 12:18 urges believers to live at peace with everyone, as far as it depends on them.
  • Reconcile first. In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus tells his followers to be reconciled with a brother before bringing their gift to the altar.
  • Forgive as you were forgiven. Colossians 3:13 calls believers to bear with one another and forgive.

Scripture is realistic. Peace takes effort, and it isn't always in one person's hands alone. Still, the call to take the first step is clear.

Whether Harry's hope is returned is unknown, but the question he raises is one many families face: can a rift be healed, and who takes the first step?
