Tyler Perry's "The Gospel of Christmas" arrives on Netflix on Nov. 11, bringing a deep bench of gospel stars to a new holiday drama.
The film premieres Nov. 11 on Netflix. Netflix lists it at 1 hour 43 minutes with a TV-PG rating. CeCe Winans, who is in the film, told fans on Facebook that it releases only on Netflix, adding, "Christmas is all about the Gospel!"
A struggling pastor inherits his family's church in a broken New York neighborhood. As he battles doubt, temptation, and a sinister adversary, he must rediscover his faith and the power of prayer to save his church, his family, and his community by Christmas.
Tank plays the pastor, Isaac, and Fantasia Barrino plays his wife, Rebecca. The gospel lineup includes Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, CeCe Winans, Hezekiah Walker, Ann Nesby, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and members of The Clark Sisters, with Chanté Moore also in the cast. Kirk Franklin produced the music, which spans gospel, rap, and holiday songs.
Perry wrote and directed the film, and says it began with the songs that carried him through rough times. "If you know gospel, you know these people," he said of the cast. For many viewers, it is a Christmas story built around prayer, music, and hope.
