Recorded just a week before Kelley's diagnosis, the trio's new song asks what trusting God looks like when life becomes painfully uncertain.
What happens when a song about trusting God becomes the very message its singers need to hear?
For Lady A, that question gives "Bigger Picture" a deeply personal weight. Released October 28, the faith-centered song arrives amid Charles Kelley's battle with multiple myeloma. According to Taste of Country, the trio recorded the track just one week before learning of his diagnosis.
The timing has transformed a recording session into something far more consequential for the group.
"The day before we went into the studio to finish up our next record, this song was sent to Hillary," Lady A shared in a social media statement quoted by Taste of Country. "We cut it the next day and then, a week later, we learned of Charles' cancer diagnosis."
The group said the song's message is now helping carry them through this season-and prompted them to share it sooner than planned.
"Bigger Picture" approaches faith through experiences that can make belief difficult: the collapse of a marriage, pregnancy loss and the fear of cancer returning. These are the song's narrative situations; they should not be read as accounts of the members' personal lives. Together, they frame a searching question: How do people continue trusting God when what they can see offers little reassurance?
The song's central image is a painting viewed in fragments. Human beings see only a small portion, while God sees the whole. Yet the lyric also acknowledges the frustration of living with that limited perspective-the desire to take control when the picture unfolding bears little resemblance to the life someone hoped for.
That tension gives the song its pastoral significance. Doubt remains audible. Prayer includes protest. Trust emerges amid questions that have yet to receive an answer.
For Christian listeners, the song invites reflection on the relationship between lament and belief. Can someone question God's purposes while still reaching toward Him? Can confidence in His care coexist with fear about tomorrow? "Bigger Picture" makes room for those experiences to occupy the same prayer.
Its message also calls for tenderness. For someone facing illness or grieving a loss, an appeal to God's larger purpose can be difficult to receive. The song's most compelling invitation is therefore to accompany people through uncertainty, allowing sorrow and hope to be expressed together.
Kelley's diagnosis makes these questions especially immediate for Lady A. The group is sharing a song about surrender while facing circumstances whose outcome they cannot control.
"Bigger Picture" offers listeners language for that unfinished place: faith that keeps praying, even when the next part of the story remains unseen.
