Nicolas Cage says he is living in hotels after a sinkhole damaged his Malibu beachfront home, but he is not without a place to stay.
The 62-year-old actor spoke about it at L.A. Comic Con on Saturday, Oct. 31, when asked about his Halloween plans. "I'm currently a little bit homeless," he said, explaining that something happened to his Malibu house and he is living in hotels.
The sinkhole opened on Tuesday, Sept. 8, beneath the driveway of the property, which Cage reportedly bought in 2024 for $10.5 million. Reports described it as about 25 feet deep. It ruptured a gas main, and the home was unoccupied at the time, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Malibu officials declared a local emergency. Five nearby homes were red-tagged at first, and the Los Angeles Times later reported evacuation orders for 31 nearby homes. The American Red Cross opened a temporary shelter at Malibu High School.
Cage says the situation hasn't stopped him from celebrating with his 4-year-old daughter, August. Reports say they planned to go trick-or-treating in Santa Monica. He did not say when he expects to return home.
For the neighbors who were evacuated, many readers will want to say a prayer for their safety and a quick return home.
