John Goodman says losing about 200 pounds has come with some unexpected effects. The 74-year-old actor said on the Monday, Nov. 2, episode of Josh Horowitz's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast that he is still adjusting to his appearance. "I'm still trying to get used to my face," he said, adding that he sees himself one way and is surprised when he looks in the mirror.
Goodman has credited changes to his diet and exercise. He also told The New Yorker in October that he had stomach surgery, and that he became anemic and is cold all the time.
On the podcast, he said he turned down a scene on "The Righteous Gemstones" that called for nudity because he was uncomfortable with how his body would look after the weight loss. He said he and the crew found a way to make the scene work. He also wondered whether his earlier weight limited his career, joking that it may have been "self-sabotage." As for the public attention to his body, he said he tries to ignore it.
Goodman led the televangelist Gemstone family on the HBO series, which ran from 2019 to 2025. He is also in "Digger" with Tom Cruise.
His candid reflections are a reminder that big life changes bring gratitude and adjustment at the same time. Many readers will see that as encouragement to be patient with themselves.
