The mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is missing in Arizona, and authorities believe she may have been taken against her will.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson on Saturday night, January 31. Her family became concerned when she did not attend church the next morning and called for a welfare check. When deputies arrived, they found her home undisturbed-with her phone, wallet, car, and essential medication left behind.
In a press conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that detectives are treating the disappearance as suspicious and have launched a criminal investigation. He noted that Nancy has limited mobility and that "there's reason to believe she did not leave of her own free will." Crime scene technicians and search teams have been deployed in the surrounding area.
Savannah Guthrie has not appeared on Today since the news broke. In a social media post, she thanked the public for their support and asked for continued prayers.
"We're trusting God and asking for your prayers for our mom's safety," she wrote.
Guthrie, a committed Christian, has often spoken about her faith journey. In interviews, she describes being raised in a Baptist home and says that faith remains a central, grounding force in her life. Her 2024 book, Mostly What God Does, explores the belief that "God is love", even in times of suffering and uncertainty.
The family has asked for privacy as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
