Organizers of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics have responded to ongoing speculation surrounding Mariah Carey's opening ceremony performance, declining to directly confirm whether the global pop star sang live during her appearance.
Carey performed the Italian classic "Nel Blu, Dipinto di Blu" ("Volare") before transitioning into her song "Nothing Is Impossible" during the televised ceremony at San Siro Stadium. Following the broadcast, viewers across social media raised questions about apparent timing inconsistencies between her vocals and lip movements, prompting renewed debate after Olympic officials addressed the matter.
When asked directly about the use of lip-syncing, opening ceremony director Maria Laura Iascone confirmed that a pre-recorded track had been prepared, though she stopped short of stating whether it was ultimately used during Carey's performance. Iascone emphasized that pre-recording elements is standard practice for large-scale international broadcasts, citing the technical demands of Olympic ceremonies.
"During all the ceremonies, in order to be on the safe side, we always record," Iascone said, noting that such measures are common in events requiring precise timing and sound coordination. She also praised Carey's performance, describing it as "extraordinary" and expressing satisfaction with the overall presentation.
A spokesperson for the Milan-Cortina organizing committee later explained that certain elements of the ceremony were pre-recorded to ensure sound quality and seamless coordination among more than 1,300 performers, musicians, and production teams involved in the event.
While questions about the performance remain unresolved, the discussion has once again highlighted the balance between authenticity and technical excellence on the world's biggest stages-a conversation that resonates beyond entertainment and invites reflection on integrity, preparation, and transparency, values long emphasized within faith-centered communities.
As the Winter Olympics continue, Carey's appearance remains one of the most talked-about moments from the opening night.
