The man at the center of the dramatic protest that briefly disrupted a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Capitol Hill has been identified as Brian McGinnis, a former U.S. Marine and current Senate candidate from North Carolina.

McGinnis drew national attention after he interrupted the hearing on March 4, 2026, shouting anti-war statements before being physically removed from the room by U.S. Capitol Police officers with assistance from Sen. Tim Sheehy, a Republican senator from Montana and fellow Marine veteran.

The confrontation, which was captured on video and widely circulated online, temporarily halted the hearing before proceedings resumed.

A Former Marine

According to public records and his campaign profile, Brian McGinnis served in the United States Marine Corps from 2000 to 2004.

During the Capitol Hill incident, McGinnis wore a Marine-style military uniform, which made the protest particularly striking as it unfolded during a hearing focused on military readiness and national defense.

His military background has been a key part of his public identity as he speaks out on issues related to war, veterans, and foreign policy.

A Senate Candidate

McGinnis is also running for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina as a Green Party candidate.

The Green Party is known for advocating environmental policies, social justice initiatives, and non-interventionist foreign policy positions.

According to individuals involved with his campaign, McGinnis has been vocal about his opposition to escalating global conflicts and has urged U.S. leaders to reconsider military involvement overseas.

The Capitol Hill Protest

The incident took place during a Senate Armed Services Subcommittee hearing examining the readiness of U.S. military forces.

About 30 minutes into the session, McGinnis stood up and began shouting objections related to the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran.

At one point he yelled:

"No one wants to fight for Israel."

Capitol Police officers quickly moved to remove him from the room, but video shows McGinnis resisting as they attempted to escort him out. During the struggle near the doorway, Sen. Tim Sheehy left his seat and assisted officers in lifting McGinnis and removing him from the chamber.

Injury and Arrest

During the confrontation, McGinnis' arm appeared to become caught between the door and its frame while officers attempted to pull him from the room.

He later claimed that his arm was broken during the incident and was transported to George Washington University Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not confirmed the extent of his injuries.

Capitol Police said McGinnis was arrested following the disruption and faces several charges, including:

  • Three counts of assault on a police officer

  • Three counts of resisting arrest

  • One count of crowding, obstructing, or incommoding

Officials said the protester "violently resisted" officers while they attempted to remove him.

A Viral Political Moment

The confrontation quickly spread across social media as video footage showed officers and Sheehy physically carrying the protester out of the hearing room.

The moment added another layer of political tension to an already sensitive discussion about U.S. military involvement abroad.

After the incident, Sen. Sheehy said the protester appeared to be looking for a confrontation and that he stepped in to help officers de-escalate the situation.

Meanwhile, McGinnis and his supporters say the protest was meant to draw attention to concerns about the direction of U.S. foreign policy.

The incident continues to spark debate online as the video circulates widely across news outlets and social media platforms.
