Erika Kirk has been appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy Board of Visitors, continuing the legacy of her late husband, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who previously served on the panel. The appointment was made by President Donald J. Trump, placing Erika Kirk among the members responsible for providing oversight and recommendations regarding the academy's operations and development.
The Air Force Academy Board of Visitors is a 16-member advisory body that reviews key areas of the academy, including cadet morale, academic programs, financial matters, and institutional policies. The board submits recommendations to the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense, helping guide the future of one of the nation's most important military training institutions.
Erika Kirk steps into the role previously held by her husband, Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA. Charlie Kirk was appointed to the board by President Trump in March 2025 and attended one meeting in August before he was tragically killed in September 2025 during an attack on the campus of Utah Valley University.
During his time on the board, Charlie Kirk raised concerns about issues affecting the academy, including debates surrounding critical race theory and diversity programs, while also advocating for faster progress on renovations of the historic Air Force Academy Chapel. He frequently emphasized the importance of ensuring cadets understand the unique principles and values that shape the United States.
The White House praised both Charlie Kirk's contributions and Erika Kirk's appointment to continue that work. In a statement, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales highlighted the impact Charlie Kirk had while serving on the board.
"Charlie Kirk served proudly on the Board, inspiring not only the next generation of servicemembers, but millions around the world with his bold Christian faith, defense of the truth, and deep love of country," Wales said. "Erika Kirk will continue his legacy and will be a fearless advocate for the most elite airpower force in the history of the world whose warriors keep our Nation safe, strong, and free."
Rep. August Pfluger (R-Texas), who chairs the Board of Visitors, also expressed strong support for the appointment. He said he had recommended Erika Kirk for the role months earlier and believes she will help advance the board's mission.
"Erika is the right person to fill Charlie's place on the board and continue his work of inspiring the next generation of service members and advancing the academy," Pfluger said.
The board includes several prominent members from government and public life, including Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Sen. Ted Budd (R-N.C.), and Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), among others.
Located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Air Force Academy trains and educates future officers for both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force. The Board of Visitors regularly evaluates the academy's performance to ensure it continues fulfilling its mission of preparing leaders of character dedicated to national service.
Erika Kirk's appointment comes as the Trump administration continues to place several allies and public figures on oversight boards connected to the nation's military academies, shaping discussions around education, leadership training, and the future direction of these institutions.
