Pastor Jonathan "Jon" D. Davis, a longtime pastor and university leader at Charleston Southern University, has died after a multi-year battle with brain cancer. Davis passed away at the age of 58 following a diagnosis of stage-4 glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer first identified in 2021.
Davis served as associate vice president for spiritual life at Charleston Southern University and was also the longtime pastor of Summit Church Charleston in South Carolina. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he became widely known for mentoring students, preaching the gospel, and shaping the university's spiritual life.
His connection with Charleston Southern began in 1991, when he joined the school as an assistant football coach after previously coaching at Temple University. He later transitioned from athletics into ministry, becoming pastor of Summit Church in 1999 while continuing to serve the university in various leadership roles.
Davis eventually returned to the university in ministry leadership roles, serving as assistant campus pastor, campus pastor, assistant dean of students, and director of the Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership before being named associate vice president for spiritual life in 2019.
Despite his cancer diagnosis, Davis continued to minister and encourage students. In a chapel message in 2021, he urged young people to prioritize their relationship with Jesus above all else, saying that knowing Christ would shape the direction of their lives more than success, career, or relationships.
Davis is survived by his wife Lynette, whom he married in 1989, along with their four children and three grandchildren.
A funeral service for Davis is scheduled to take place at First Baptist Church of Salisbury, North Carolina, followed by a celebration of life at Charleston Southern University.
University leaders and members of the church community have described Davis as a deeply loved mentor and pastor who "never met a stranger" and whose life was devoted to sharing the gospel and investing in the next generation.
