Security personnel at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, are being praised for their swift response after confronting and stopping a suspect who rammed a vehicle into the synagogue during a violent attack on Thursday afternoon.
Authorities say the incident began shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time when a vehicle crashed through the entrance of the synagogue located in the Detroit suburb. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the suspect drove the vehicle into the building and continued down a hallway, striking a security guard in the process.
The guard who was hit by the vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover, officials said.
Other security personnel at the synagogue quickly responded and engaged the suspect in gunfire, ultimately stopping the attacker. Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was dead at the scene.
Sheriff Bouchard said surveillance footage showed the vehicle moving through the building with apparent intent.
"He was travelling with purpose down the hall," Bouchard said during a press briefing, describing the dramatic moments inside the synagogue before security intervened.
Temple Israel, widely known as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States, has about 12,000 members and operates several educational programs, including the Susan and Harold Loss Early Childhood Center located within the building.
At the time of the attack, approximately 140 children and staff members were inside the early childhood center. Temple officials later confirmed that all students and personnel were safely accounted for after teachers and staff implemented emergency procedures.
In a statement shared with the community, the synagogue expressed gratitude for the actions of its security team and staff.
"Our courageous teachers and heroic security personnel kept everyone safe and calm," the statement read. "All of our students, teachers, and staff are accounted for and safe."
The suspect's vehicle later caught fire, sending smoke rising from the building as dozens of police officers, firefighters, and emergency responders rushed to the scene. Authorities said around 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation while responding to the incident.
Investigators are also examining whether the vehicle contained explosives or other dangerous materials. Police temporarily urged residents in the surrounding area to shelter in place while bomb squads and federal agents cleared the scene.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has since described the incident as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community." The agency is leading the investigation along with local authorities, though officials have not yet identified the suspect or confirmed a motive.
Following the attack, several major cities including New York and Los Angeles announced increased police patrols around synagogues, Jewish schools, and cultural centers as a precaution.
Faith leaders and community members across the region have also expressed support for the Temple Israel congregation, emphasizing the importance of protecting houses of worship and standing together against acts of violence.
For many observers, the quick actions of Temple Israel's security personnel helped prevent what could have been a far more devastating tragedy.
