American Idol has always had its share of Christians. But somewhere between Season 8 and right now, something shifted. The faith stopped being a footnote and started being the story. From the stage to the charts to the pulpit, here is what happened to the Christian contestants who made their beliefs the centerpiece of their time on the show - and what they are doing in 2026.

Hannah Harper - The Mom Who Turned American Idol Into a Worship Service (Season 24, Still Competing)

Hannah Harper is currently the most talked-about contestant on American Idol Season 24 - and she has not won yet. The Missouri native grew up in a bluegrass gospel family that toured churches and festivals, learning early that singing was never about spectacle but about connection. That instinct came through the moment she auditioned with an original song called "String Cheese," written while dealing with postpartum depression, which has since been viewed more than 750,000 times.

Her Hawaii round performance of "Ain't No Grave" had judge Lionel Richie telling her she went from singing to preaching, while Luke Bryan said she had invented a new genre he called resurrection rock. Harper herself said it simply: she is grateful for the platform to bring glory to God and for the freedom to openly sing about her Lord without hesitation. She is still in the competition as of this week - and the Christian community is watching every Monday night.

Breanna Nix - The Stay-at-Home Mom Who Finished Third and Hit Number One Anyway (Season 23, 2025)

Breanna Nix was a stay-at-home mom from Denton, Texas when she auditioned in 2024, going against the warnings of people in her life who told her it would ruin everything. She listened to God instead. She finished third on Season 23 behind winner Jamal Roberts - and then immediately proved the placement did not define her ceiling.

Her debut single "Higher" climbed to number one on the iTunes country chart and debuted at number one on the Billboard Christian Digital Songs Sales chart in the same week, knocking "Hard Fought Hallelujah" off the top spot. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut just weeks after the finale and received two standing ovations. Nix has been clear about her mission: she wants to be a Christian country artist who encourages people with the message of the gospel. Everything she has done since the show suggests she is well on her way.

Canaan James Hill - The 17-Year-Old Aspiring Preacher Who Went Straight Back to Ministry (Season 23, 2025)

Canaan James Hill never intended to audition for American Idol. It was his family who pushed him - and he now credits that decision as one that allowed souls to be saved. The Dallas teenager earned a platinum ticket in his audition with a gospel performance that left judge Lionel Richie at a loss for words, and he made it all the way to the Top 10. When he was eliminated, he went live on Facebook to tell his fans he was not sad, not hurt, and fully at peace. He said he believed God allowed what happened for a reason and that greater things were ahead.

He was right. Since the show, Hill has been performing at community events, bringing that same worship energy he showed on Idol to churches and nonprofit gatherings - most recently drawing a lively crowd at a Detroit library event hosted by a nonprofit dedicated to community accessibility. A gospel album is in the works. He has over 108,000 Instagram followers and is still going by his booking name: singer, preacher, comedian.

Colton Dixon - The One Who Started It All (Season 11, 2012)

Before any of them, there was Colton Dixon. He made history in 2013 with the biggest first-week sales by a new solo Christian act with his debut album A Messenger, and has since scored multiple number one albums on the Billboard Top Christian Albums Chart. His 2022 hit "Build a Boat" went Gold, generated over 179 million streams, and became the longest-running Mediabase Christian AC number one song of that year. He has performed at the White House National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, the Grand Ole Opry, and on Good Morning America, Fox & Friends, and the Today show. In fall 2025, he hit the road on the Ignite Tour alongside fellow Idol alum Danny Gokey. His newest single "The Love I Have For You" is currently climbing radio charts.

Danny Gokey - The Grief-Fueled Voice That Became One of CCM's Most Consistent Chart Performers (Season 8, 2009)

Danny Gokey is a three-time Grammy nominee with five number one Christian radio singles, five number one album debuts on the Billboard Top Christian Chart, and over one billion career streams. He has spent more than fifteen years turning personal loss - he famously auditioned for Idol weeks after losing his wife - into music that has consistently ranked among the most-played songs in Christian radio. In late 2025 he signed with Red Street Records for a new chapter, with new music already in motion. He spent fall 2025 co-headlining the Ignite Tour with Colton Dixon and Mac Powell.

The Bigger Picture

American Idol aired a three-hour Easter special in 2025 themed around Songs of Faith - the first time the show had done something like it - with every remaining contestant performing worship and gospel music alongside CeCe Winans, Brandon Lake, and Jelly Roll. The fact that it happened at all says something about how much the show has changed. The Christians are no longer the exception on that stage. They are, increasingly, the story.

Season 24 is still airing Monday nights on ABC. Hannah Harper's next performance is March 23.
