Olivia Rodrigo is officially back - and this time, she's going somewhere deeper.
The pop star announced this week that her first new single, "Drop Dead," will arrive on Friday, April 17 - the first taste of her upcoming third studio album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, set for release on June 12.
The announcement came with a disarmingly simple Instagram post - Rodrigo blowing a bubble with gum, the words "drop dead" embroidered on her white shirt in her signature curly font. In the days before the reveal, fans spotted heart-shaped locks with her initials placed by Rodrigo herself on fences in Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Hoboken, New Jersey. The rollout was personal, handcrafted, and very her.
Though little has been officially shared about the album's full track listing, a British Vogue writer who heard three songs described them as "instantly transporting, cinematic and so intimate." Notably, one song is about "the spirituality of finding the man of your dreams" - a description that stands out in an era of pop music that rarely goes anywhere near that territory.
Rodrigo herself described the album as full of "sad love songs," adding: "No matter how hard I try to write love songs they always come out laced with a little melancholy."
For a generation of young listeners who grew up with Sour and Guts, those words carry weight. And for a faith community that believes love, longing, and spiritual searching are deeply connected - this album is worth paying attention to.
The 23-year-old Filipina-American singer has always written from an honest, searching place. The album's June 12 release date also coincides with the Philippines' Independence Day - a detail her Filipino fanbase worldwide is already celebrating.
"Drop Dead" drops April 17. The album follows June 12. Mark both.
