Bethel's Jenn Johnson Says "Worship Means Nothing Without Obedience" as She Releases Raw New Single “Mad At God”

GRAMMY-nominated worship leader Jenn Johnson is calling the Church back to a deeper, more costly understanding of faith-one where worship is not merely sung, but lived. Her message, recently highlighted in a feature by RELEVANT Magazine, arrives alongside the release of her vulnerable new single, "Mad At God."

In the RELEVANT Magazine article, Johnson wrestles openly with a tension many believers quietly carry: the disconnect between outward devotion and inward obedience.

"Christians talk about devotion like it's the ultimate marker of faith... but when it comes to obedience, sacrifice, and rest-we hesitate," she observed.

For Johnson, this is not a theoretical concern-it is deeply personal. After years of leading global worship through Bethel Music, she is now asking whether the songs the Church sings are truly shaping the way it lives.

Drawing from her study of the Old Testament, Johnson points to the weight and intentionality of biblical worship. Offerings were never casual; they required preparation, sacrifice, and full surrender. That same call, she insists, still stands today.

"There is a sacrifice daily still required from us," she says, emphasizing that true worship must move beyond emotion into action.

This conviction finds a poignant expression in "Mad At God," a song born out of grief following the loss of her mother-in-law. Rather than offering easy answers, the track creates space for honesty-acknowledging anger, confusion, and unanswered questions. Yet even in that rawness, the song points toward surrender, reminding listeners that bringing their pain before God is itself an act of faith.

Johnson also highlights how modern life often resists obedience in subtle ways-through busyness, distraction, and a reluctance to embrace practices like Sabbath rest. What God commands, she notes, is often treated as optional.

"Worship isn't just a moment of connection... it's a choice to lay everything at His feet-not just in song, but in the way we live," she explains.

As a songwriter behind global anthems like "Goodness of God," "The Blood," and "Holy Forever," Johnson has helped shape the sound of contemporary worship for years. But with her upcoming solo album HAPPY, she is entering a more personal and reflective space-one that traces a journey through grief, healing, and rediscovered joy.

Blending worship with touches of country and pop, HAPPY features collaborations with artists such as Brian Johnson, Brooke Ligertwood, and Abbie Gamboa. The project moves intentionally from lament to praise, holding tension without rushing resolution. Songs like "Mad At God" sit alongside declarations of gratitude and trust, painting a fuller picture of what it means to walk with God in every season.

In many ways, the album embodies the very message Johnson is proclaiming: that faith is not confined to mountaintop moments, but forged in the daily choice to trust, obey, and respond.

In a culture that often equates worship with feeling, Johnson's voice-amplified by RELEVANT Magazine-offers a necessary recalibration:
worship only becomes real when it transforms the way we live.

"We must respond," she says. "How could we not?"
