With Mother's Day just around the corner, one song keeps finding its way back into Christian playlists - and for good reason.
Steven Curtis Chapman released "Speed of Love" as a tribute to his own mother, Judy, with the song centered on the small, intentional acts of kindness that define a mother's love. Chapman said his mom has always been deliberate about noticing the people around her, including her work at a community kitchen where she takes time to engage with people and hear their stories.
The story behind the song runs even deeper. A health scare his mother faced in 2024 - cancer returning after a 25-year remission - moved Chapman to finally share the song publicly. She told him: "That's why the Lord kept me here after two battles of cancer - He's keeping me going so I can keep on shining His light out there in that dark world."
That kind of faith is exactly what "Speed of Love" is about. As one line in the song puts it: "You're never gonna read about her in the headlines. Safe to say the world will never know her name. But I believe we're gonna find when we meet at the finish line, just how much the world was changed by the ones who chose to run this race."
Chapman believes moms have a unique gift - they are constantly on the go, yet fully present, offering kindness, love, and compassion to whoever is in front of them. For millions of Christian families, that description hits close to home.
The most awarded artist in Christian music history, Chapman holds 60 GMA Dove Awards, five GRAMMY Awards, and 50 No. 1 singles spanning more than three decades. He continues to tour in 2026, with upcoming dates still on the calendar for fans who haven't caught the Speechless Tour yet.
This Mother's Day, before the flowers and the brunch and the cards, press play on "Speed of Love." It's a three-minute reminder of what the Bible has always told us - that the quiet, faithful, unglamorous love of a mother carries the power to change the world.
"Honor your father and your mother." - Exodus 20:12
