Q: Clark Beckham, many listeners first discovered you on American Idol. How did that experience shape your identity as an artist in the years that followed?
The people of American Idol, by far, had the biggest impact on me. Realizing that no matter what I did, what heights my career would or wouldn't reach, the people are always the prize. On Idol, you go through this wild experience with the same people and you learn how incredible everyone is. Not just at what they do, but how they think, what they love, and what they wish were different. I don't know if it shaped my identity as an artist, but it certainly shaped me as a fellow human being.
Q: Your sound blends blue-eyed soul, gospel, and pop. How did you develop that style, and which influences have most shaped your vocal approach?
My Mount Rushmore: Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Ray Charles. If I could add two more, it would be Billy Joel and Paul McCartney. I grew up listening to oldies with my mom, and my dad was part of that world himself in a way. He played for Bill Medley, Dolly Parton, and a slew of others. Of all the singers I've looked up to, my dad has actually been my number one influence by far.
Q: You have performed with groups like the Nashville Symphony and appeared in large-scale productions like Tommee Profitt's Christmas show at Bridgestone Arena. How have those experiences expanded your artistry?
Ya know... I hate to sound like a broken record, but I wouldn't say those experiences shaped my artistry as much as they shaped me as a human being because of the people involved. And that's not fluffy interview chatter. That's the honest truth. One thing I loved was that even though we had some of the biggest Christian artists in the world on that show, everyone was nervous backstage. Like, super nervous. That made me realize that no matter how successful you are or how "good" people think you are, you're still terrified to sing in front of a sold-out arena. Good to know everyone's human lol.
Q: Your new song "Mystery" explores the tension between the vastness of the world and personal intimacy. What inspired that theme, and how did it take shape during the writing process?
When I think of God, it's His vast, infinite capability that I think of first. My favorite part about Him, however, is His intimacy with me. I think of all the times He's ministered to me alone in my room. I could cry right now just writing about it. When I put those two together, I get the mystery of an infinitely grand being who's just as infinitely in love with me. Of all the mysteries of God, that's my favorite.
Q: The song moves from cosmic scale to deeply personal moments. Was that shift intentional, and what do you hope listeners feel when they hear that transition?
That was absolutely our intention when we wrote it. I hope listeners feel how big God is and how much He loves them. When you put those together, you can't help but feel valued, thought of, and secure.
Q: As an artist signed to NCS Records and someone who also mentors emerging talent, what is next for you? Are there new releases, collaborations, or larger projects on the horizon?
Quite a bit! I don't think I've ever been this busy in my life. We have an album coming out this summer that's just me, live at the piano, playing jazz/soul fusion arrangements of household worship songs. The first few singles are already out, including Goodness of God and I Could Sing of Your Love Forever. After that, we're doing the same concept but with a full band. Then comes an original album in the secular space, writing songs about God's creation and the human experience. As far as gigs go, I'm starting the first leg of my "Know Me" tour this week, just returned from the Philippines after speaking at my first church conference, and I'm traveling around teaching workshops to churches and colleges. Singer, teacher, preacher... I guess that's my job now lol.
