Few bands have shaped modern Christian music quite like Third Day. Formed in Marietta, Georgia, in 1991 by lead vocalist Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee, and Billy Wilkins, the group went on to become one of the defining acts in contemporary Christian music history. Their name - inspired by the biblical account of Jesus rising from the dead on the third day - would eventually become synonymous with faith-filled Southern rock, worship anthems, and spiritually grounded storytelling.
Over the course of three decades, Third Day sold more than 7 million albums in the United States, scored 28 No. 1 Christian radio hits, won four Grammy Awards, collected 25 Dove Awards, and built one of the most loyal fan communities in Christian music - affectionately known as the "Gomers," named after a song from the band's second album, Conspiracy No. 5.
Now, after disbanding in 2018 following an emotional farewell tour, the legendary band has reunited for a special 30th anniversary celebration, bringing together original members for the first time in years.
Speaking during the anniversary tour, Powell reflected on how meaningful the reunion has been, especially after the group's final tour lacked several longtime members.
"Now that we've got the four original members back in the band playing this 30 years of Third Day music, it's a lot of fun," Powell shared.
The reunion has also reignited appreciation for the band's enormous musical legacy. Beginning with their self-titled debut album in 1996, Third Day released a string of influential records including Conspiracy No. 5, Time, Come Together, Wire, Wherever You Are, Revelation, Move, Miracle, Lead Us Back: Songs of Worship, and Revival. Their Offerings worship albums became particularly beloved within churches worldwide, helping define congregational worship music for an entire generation.
Songs such as "Cry Out to Jesus," "God of Wonders," "Soul on Fire," "You Are So Good to Me," "Call My Name," "I Need a Miracle," and "Mountain of God" became staples across Christian radio, youth groups, worship services, and arena tours around the globe.
The accolades followed naturally. Third Day earned Grammy wins for albums including Come Together, Wire, Wherever You Are, and Live Revelations, while also dominating the Dove Awards throughout the late 1990s and 2000s. Billboard later ranked the band among the top Christian artists of the entire decade, including No. 3 Christian Albums Artist of the 2000s and No. 5 Christian Songs Artist of the Decade.
Beyond commercial success, however, fans often point to the emotional honesty and spiritual depth of Third Day's music as the real reason behind the band's lasting impact. Their songs blended worship, rock, vulnerability, hope, and biblical conviction in a way that resonated deeply with listeners navigating real-life struggles.
Powell said one of the greatest lessons he has learned throughout the band's journey has been discovering the faithfulness of God over time.
"When you're a young believer, you read about God's faithfulness and you believe it," Powell explained. "But until you've lived a few years and gone through some things, you don't really know."
That message may ultimately define Third Day's enduring legacy. For millions of listeners, the band's music became more than entertainment - it became part of their testimony, accompanying them through grief, worship, healing, doubt, celebration, and spiritual renewal.
Three decades later, Third Day remains one of the most beloved, influential, and spiritually impactful bands in Christian music history.
