Hannah Harper just became the Season 24 American Idol - but after the confetti settles and the tears dry, what does that title actually come with? And for runner-up Jordan McCullough, the Nashville worship director who came within one vote of the crown - is second place really the end?
Here's everything you need to know.
What Hannah Harper Actually Walks Away With
Winning American Idol in 2026 is not the million-dollar moment it once was. When Kelly Clarkson took the title back in 2002, she walked away with a $1 million recording contract. That number has dropped significantly over the years.
Today's winner receives $125,000 upfront - and another $100,000 once the debut album is delivered, totaling $250,000. But as Season 16 winner Maddie Poppe put it plainly, it's "not really $250,000 because of taxes" - and the money works more like a record advance that eventually has to be recouped from album sales.
Harper also receives a $300,000 recording budget to produce her first album, plus $1,000 a week in living expenses during studio time. On top of that - a record deal with American Idol's affiliated 19 Management, which is where the real career begins.
But the moment that said everything about Hannah Harper had nothing to do with dollars. She closed the finale singing Chris Tomlin's "At the Cross (Love Ran Red)" - through tears, surrounded by family and fellow contestants. For a 25-year-old stay-at-home mom from Willow Springs, Missouri who wrote original songs about her real life, the prize was never just the title.
What's Next for Runner-Up Jordan McCullough
Second place on American Idol is far from a dead end - and for Jordan McCullough, it may be just the beginning.
Runner-ups are sometimes offered a label deal from the show's affiliated network, historically at roughly half the winner's package - around $87,500 upfront, plus another $87,000 upon completing an album. No guarantee, but given McCullough's devoted fanbase and his standout season, a deal is very much on the table.
History also shows that second place can lead somewhere great. Adam Lambert finished runner-up in Season 8 and went on to front Queen. Clay Aiken - who performed at last night's finale - never won the title either.
For McCullough, a 27-year-old worship director at Zeal Church in Nashville who has been singing in church since age four, the Idol stage was never just a competition. It was a testimony. His closing performance of "Goodness of God" - the same song that earned him a standing ovation earlier this season - was a full-circle moment that left the audience speechless. Judge Lionel Richie told him directly: "That was not only money, but your career, my friend."
For a worship leader whose voice was shaped in the house of God long before it hit a national stage, the runner-up spot may just be the door God opened to take his ministry further than a church sanctuary ever could.
Bonus: Both Hannah Harper and Jordan McCullough scored a surprise parting gift from host Ryan Seacrest - a Disney Cruise to Alaska.
