Three weeks after "The Author" quietly became one of the most talked-about songs at the crossroads of Christian and mainstream music, Brandon Lake and Nick Jonas sat down together for their most candid conversation yet about the collaboration - and dropped a tease that has fans paying close attention.
In a new interview published today, both artists opened up about how naturally the partnership came together - and why it surprised even them. Lake reflected: "It wasn't as far of a leap as I thought with us collaborating, and I think that is so rad." Jonas quickly offered an explanation: "It's the pastor's kid connection!" - a nod to the fact that both men grew up as sons of pastors.
That shared foundation runs deeper than most fans realize. Jonas has spoken openly about his family being forced out of their church after the Jonas Brothers signed with Columbia Records - a painful season that cost them their community and their home, and left him questioning his faith for years. Lake, for his part, has built his entire ministry around honest worship - music for people in the middle of the struggle, not just on the other side of it.
The song they wrote together reflects exactly that. Jonas described one of his favorite lines from the bridge: "I've seen panic turn to power / Felt your peace in my darkest hour / What grace is this / Call me by name / Again and again and again" - calling it "one of my favourite things I've ever been a part of writing."
Lake also shared what the song has become to him personally. "I've literally said that line to myself," he said, "'I don't know if I can do this. But who am I to question the pen in the hand of the Author? He asked me to do it. He's called me to do it.'"
On what this collaboration means beyond music, Lake was direct. "There's power in collaboration and in community, because I think that's what the kingdom looks like, and I think that's what heals people, is coming together."
And then there's the tease. Both Lake and Jonas have been posting cryptic hints on social media this week, with insiders suggesting a series of joint live dates could be coming. No official announcement has been made yet - but given that their first live performance together at Credit One Stadium in Charleston drew a massive reaction, it would not be a surprise.
Two pastor's kids. Two different roads. One song about letting go of the pen. Whatever comes next, the collaboration between Brandon Lake and Nick Jonas has already said something worth hearing.
