LAS VEGAS - Darius Rucker walked away from the 52nd American Music Awards on Monday night with a recognition that had nothing to do with chart positions or record sales - and everything to do with how he has chosen to use his platform off the stage.
Rucker received the Veterans Voice Award, presented by USAA's Honor Through Action, at the ceremony held live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The award is presented to artists who use their platforms to drive lasting, meaningful change for those who have served.
His selection reflects years of involvement with military-focused causes, including overseas USO tours, appearances at the Department of Defense Warrior Games, and a partnership with the Military Warriors Support Foundation to help provide more than 20 mortgage-free homes for veterans and their families.
Accepting the award, Rucker reflected on his interactions with those who have served: "We should be striving to live, to become a community and become a country that we deserve what they sacrificed."
Last year's Veterans Voice Award was presented to Zac Brown. Rucker also performed during the broadcast alongside his Hootie & the Blowfish bandmates.
The broadcast also offered viewers a look at USAA's Poppy Wall of Honor, returning for its seventh year to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. - stretching more than 130 feet with over 600,000 hand-placed poppies, each representing an American life lost in the line of duty since World War I.
Rucker's recognition is a reminder of what the Christian faith calls every believer toward - not just making music, but serving others. Honoring those who sacrificed is not just a civic duty; it is an act of love.
