Former Avalon singer Michael Passons continues to receive support from prominent Christian music artists following the release of his reimagined version of Avalon's signature hit, "Testify to Love."
Released on May 15, the new recording features Passons alongside former Avalon member Melissa Greene and country star Ty Herndon. The project has generated significant attention within both Christian and LGBTQ+ communities, with many listeners embracing the song as a message of inclusion and affirmation.
Passons, a founding member of the acclaimed CCM group Avalon, has previously shared that he was removed from the group in 2003 because of his sexuality. More than two decades later, the singer says rerecording the beloved anthem represents a deeply personal and healing moment.
"For years, I sang these words while hiding who I truly was," Passons told GLAAD. "To record this now with Ty, Melissa, and this incredible group of artists-standing fully in my truth-is a full-circle moment I once thought impossible. It serves as a testimony that love does not exclude."
The release quickly resonated with listeners, climbing to No. 1 on the iTunes Christian Music chart shortly after its debut.
Among those publicly celebrating the project were members of the Dove Award-winning group Point of Grace. In a heartfelt Instagram comment, the trio expressed their affection for Passons and reflected on years of friendship shared on the road.
"Michael We sure do love you and cherish the years of deep friendship that traveling together brought us," the group wrote. "Your voice is one of a kind-and that other guy singing with you is pretty good too!"
The message was signed, "your 3 Songbirds," highlighting the long-standing bond between the artists.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Nichole Nordeman also voiced her support, joining a growing list of Christian music figures who have encouraged Passons following the song's release.
The rerecording carries additional significance through the participation of Greene, who was a member of Avalon during the period when Passons exited the group. Over the years, Greene has become one of Passons' closest friends and a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ inclusion. In 2023, she officiated the wedding of Herndon and his husband.
The renewed attention surrounding "Testify to Love" comes amid broader conversations about faith, identity, and belonging within Christian music. For Passons, the song's message remains as powerful today as it was nearly three decades ago-while taking on new meaning through his own personal journey.
As support continues to pour in from fellow artists and fans alike, the rereleased anthem is proving that one of Christian music's most beloved songs still has the ability to spark conversation, inspire hope, and bring people together.
