Pat McAfee is known for making headlines with his unfiltered opinions, but this time the outspoken ESPN star is going viral for something far more personal-a candid conversation about Jesus.
The former NFL punter and The Pat McAfee Show host was stopped outside the ESPY Awards in New York by street evangelist Jordan Kreisle, and what began with a simple question-"Did you know Jesus loves you?"-turned into an unexpectedly heartfelt discussion about faith.
Rather than brushing the preacher aside, McAfee admitted he's been wrestling with spiritual questions as his life has changed.
"I've gotten more invested in the conversation," McAfee said, explaining that the success and blessings he's experienced have convinced him there's "got to be a reason for everything."
The 39-year-old revealed that although he was raised in a family that attended church mainly on Christmas and Easter, he now feels himself moving closer toward Christianity.
"I actually want to do a show talking about finding my God and talking about all the different religions," McAfee said. "I love the thought of Jesus Christ. I love the thought of that being it."
He then made the remark that has captured the attention of Christian viewers online.
"I think inevitably I will land there because that's kind of how I feel right now."
McAfee described himself as being "in the middle of my journey," adding that the process has been exciting rather than intimidating.
Kreisle, founder of Reel Evangelism, encouraged McAfee by explaining that Christianity is ultimately about a relationship with Jesus rather than simply religion.
"God really wants a relationship with you, Pat," the evangelist told him. "He knows every tear you've ever cried...and He still loves you so much."
Before the conversation ended, Kreisle asked if he could pray for the ESPN personality.
McAfee didn't hesitate.
"Absolutely," he replied. "I'll take good prayers."
When asked what he could pray for, McAfee pointed to his family and his two children. Kreisle then said he felt prompted to specifically pray for McAfee's daughter, telling the broadcaster he believed God was pursuing him and inviting him to "land on Jesus now."
McAfee thanked the evangelist before the two parted ways, with Kreisle later describing the encounter as "a divine moment."
The viral clip has prompted thousands of reactions across social media, with many Christians saying they're praying that McAfee's spiritual curiosity leads to a genuine commitment to Christ. He's also preparing to release his debut music album, The Diary of a Polarizing Figure, in August-a project inspired by years of criticism and public controversy.
