Princess of Wales joins the King at a historic milestone event - and it wasn't even planned until the last minute.

When Kensington Palace quietly confirmed her attendance just hours before the event, the significance wasn't lost on anyone. The Princess of Wales was a last-minute addition to the line-up for a Palace reception for Cancer Research - joining King Charles and Queen Camilla at St. James's Palace to mark 125 years of the charity, which works to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer.

Her appearance made Tuesday evening the first time both the King and the Princess of Wales have made a joint public appearance in aid of a cancer charity - a milestone moment for the Royal Family and for everyone following their individual health journeys.

The event celebrated Cancer Research UK's 125th anniversary, with charity organisers highlighting its impact and showcasing the work of researchers, clinicians, and volunteers. The reception included immersive installations showcasing how technology is transforming cancer research.

The evening carried deep personal meaning. Princess Kate's cancer was discovered during abdominal surgery in 2024. She announced in March of that year that she'd be undergoing chemotherapy, which was completed by September - and she announced she was in remission at the start of 2025. King Charles, meanwhile, is still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer after being diagnosed just weeks apart from the Princess in 2024. He shared in December 2025 that his treatment was being reduced - a milestone he called a personal blessing.

Reflecting on the night, Kate shared on Instagram: "Marking 125 years of Cancer Research at St James's Palace. Honoured to meet researchers, clinicians, volunteers and partners driving progress in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer."

King Charles has served as Patron of Cancer Research UK since April 2024. Queen Camilla and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester were also in attendance.
