"For two years I was showing up to church each week," he recalled. "Externally I was there, but internally I was so disconnected from what was happening."
The season left him uncertain about how to communicate with God. He described feeling caught between wanting to reconnect spiritually and simultaneously resisting the vulnerability required to do so.
"I didn't know what to say to God. I didn't know how to pray," he said. "I sort of wanted to engage again but didn't want to engage."
As a result, church services became predictable exercises rather than transformative encounters. Ogden remembers standing at the back of the room with folded arms, mentally rehearsing each part of the service before it happened.
"I knew exactly what was coming next," he explained. "Here's the song, here's the sermon, here's the prayer at the end."
Yet everything changed during one seemingly ordinary church gathering.
At the conclusion of the service, the pastor invited people to come forward for prayer. Initially, Ogden had no intention of responding. However, as specific prayer needs were mentioned, he was struck by how accurately they described the struggles he had been privately carrying.
"I was already thinking, 'I'm not going down,'" he remembered. "But the pastor mentioned three different things, and every one of them felt like something I was dealing with."
Watching friends step forward for prayer, Ogden eventually decided to do the same. What happened next would become a defining moment in his spiritual journey.
As he stood waiting for prayer, one of his closest friends approached him. The timing seemed almost ironic. The two had already met for coffee earlier that morning and had discussed many of the very issues weighing on Ogden's heart. Yet during prayer, his friend shared a powerful image rooted in Scripture.
The friend referenced the words of Jesus in Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
"He put his hand on my shoulder and spoke about Jesus standing at the door and knocking," Ogden said. "Then he prayed this simple phrase: 'Thank you, Jesus, that You kept knocking.'"
Those words immediately pierced through years of spiritual confusion and distance.
For the first time, Ogden recognized that while he had never completely abandoned his faith, he had effectively closed the door on intimacy with Christ.
"I realized that I had probably closed the door on Jesus internally," he explained. "In my heart, I believed He was real. I knew He was there. But I had kind of sent Him out of the house and said, 'Let me figure things out on my own.'"
The realization that transformed him was not simply that Jesus was waiting. It was that Jesus had never left.
After years of wrestling with doubt, disappointment, and spiritual fatigue, Christ had remained present, patiently pursuing relationship rather than withdrawing in rejection.
"I'd spent years trying to turn my back on Him, trying to say He wasn't there and go another way," Ogden reflected. "Then suddenly I realized that after all that time, if I opened the door, He was still there knocking."
For the singer-songwriter, that revelation became a profound picture of divine love.
"That's His love," he said. "That He stays there."
The moment also reshaped his understanding of God's character. Rather than encountering condemnation for his struggles, Ogden discovered compassion and understanding.
"I felt that He understood how hurt I was," he shared. "There was such a kindness and compassion in knowing that He saw everything I was carrying."
Today, Ogden views the experience as a reminder that faith is not sustained through performance or religious routine. Instead, it is maintained through an ongoing willingness to invite Christ into every area of life, including seasons marked by uncertainty, pain, and unanswered questions.
"Even as a Christian, even as someone who's grown up in church and thought I had a great relationship with God, I still need to open the door to Him again and again," he said.

"That's a rhythm throughout life," he explained. "It's not something I only do once. I need to keep opening the door and letting Jesus come into my mess-in the middle of how I'm feeling, the doubts, the questions, everything."
Perhaps most importantly, Ogden believes believers can approach Christ without fear of rejection.
"He's not coming in with judgment," he said. "He's coming to sit with me and be there in it."
