When the United States steps onto the pitch for its 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 12, all eyes will be on the goalkeeper - and for Matt Freese, that moment is the result of a journey shaped not just by talent and hard work, but by a faith that has been there from the very beginning.
Ahead of the tournament, Freese sat down with Sports Spectrum's What's Up podcast to talk openly about his faith in Christ, his path with the U.S. Men's National Team, and his soccer journey - a conversation that revealed just as much about the man as it does about the goalkeeper.
Freese grew up attending Catholic Mass with his family, and by his own account, that foundation never became a question as he got older. His faith continued to shape his journey through college and into professional soccer, including time in Bible study with teammates. For Freese, belief in God has never been separate from his career - it has been a lasting part of the life and path he continues to walk.
That commitment shows in how he carries himself on the national team. Freese participates in Bible study groups and prayer sessions alongside teammates like Chris Richards and Weston McKennie, part of a USMNT generation that is notably and openly grounded in Christian faith.
His road to this moment is remarkable by any measure. The 27-year-old turned down Manchester United as a teenager to attend Harvard, from which he earned an economics degree in 2022 - the son of a renowned neurosurgeon and a healthcare executive who prioritized academics above all. Reflecting on that decision, Freese has said: "They sacrificed so much for me, so I had to repay that and honor what they wanted - and then, when the time was right, make my decision for myself."
That decision to go his own way at the right time paid off. Over the past year, Freese has started 15 of 18 matches under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, firmly establishing himself as the team's projected No. 1 goalkeeper heading into the tournament. A year ago, he had never played an international game. Today, he carries the hopes of an entire nation into the world's biggest sporting event.
The United States opens its 2026 World Cup campaign in Group D against Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye, with the tournament running from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Matt Freese is proof that the path God ordains does not always look like the obvious one - and that staying grounded in faith, family, and humility can carry a person further than any shortcut ever could. The JubileeCast community is cheering him on every step of the way.
